Donations to Friarage in memory of Penny O'Kelly

2 Feb 2026

We’d like to extend our thanks to the family and friends of Penny O’Kelly from Ainderby Steeple, who passed away after a short illness in November last year. Penny was nursed during her illness at the Friarage and her husband, David, requested that donations from Penny’s funeral be sent to Friends of the Friarage.

The donations came in from far and wide, including one from Texas, US and one from Melbourne, Australia - and raised an amazing total of £2,860, with an additional £572 in Gift Aid, bringing the total to £3,432. The outpouring of good wishes and loving messages showed us just how loved and missed Penny is.

David estimates that over the course of their 38 years of married life, Penny had either visited or been treated in just about every department and ward of the Friarage, starting with having both their children in the maternity unit. Supportive of the hospital and keen to see services kept local, David thought it only fitting that the place that treated Penny so well over the years should benefit, and is happy for Friends of the Friarage to direct the funds as agreed by trustees.

Thank you, David, for coming into the hospital to see us and talk to us about Penny, your kindness and generosity means that we can keep on enhancing and investing in services at our much-loved hospital.
